La torre de Auriac, más conocida como la "Tour des Pénitents", es la única que se conserva hoy en día de la quincena de torres defensivas que completaban las murallas que rodeaban la ciudad de Mende en el siglo XV.
De forma semicircular, se construyó contra la muralla, de la que aún se puede ver un tramo del paseo de ronda.
Se modificó en gran medida a finales del siglo XVI.
Las murallas fueron desmanteladas en 1768.
La torre de Auriac se ha conservado porque ya se utilizaba como campanario de la capilla de los Penitentes, construida en 1657 para los Penitentes Blancos, cofradía fundada en 1626.
La Torre de los Penitentes sólo es accesible durante algunas visitas guiadas.
