The tower of Auriac, better known as the "Tour des Pénitents" is the only one preserved today of the fifteen or so defensive towers that completed the ramparts surrounding the city of Mende in the 15th century.
Semicircular in shape, it was built against the rampart, of which a piece of the covered way is still perceptible.
It was largely modified at the end of the 16th century.
The walls were dismantled in 1768.
The Auriac tower has been preserved because it was already used as a bell tower for the chapel of the penitents, built in 1657 for the brotherhood of the White Penitents, founded in 1626.
The Tower of the Penitents is only accessible during certain guided tours.
