La existencia de estas escaleras se remonta a la Edad Media. Originalmente talladas directamente en la roca, servían de paso entre la ciudad alta, sede del poder espiritual del obispado, y la ciudad baja, lugar de muchos intercambios comerciales. El nicho de madera contenía una estatua de la Virgen María, que marcaba el límite entre la jurisdicción de la ciudad y la del cabildo de la catedral.

En lo alto de la escalera, la antigua inscripción en la barandilla de hierro forjado "a expensas de M. Bousmard grand Prévôst, Claude Amil a faict ceste besogne. 1595 ".
