Escaliers des gros degrés

The existence of these staircases dates back to the Middle Ages. Originally carved directly into the rock, they served as a passageway between the upper town, the seat of the spiritual power of the bishopric, and the lower town, the site of many commercial exchanges. The wooden niche contained a statue of the Virgin Mary, which marked the boundary between the jurisdiction of the city and that of the cathedral chapter.

At the top of the stairs, the ancient inscription on the wrought iron railing "at the expense of M. Bousmard grand Prévôst, Claude Amil did this work. 1595 ".
