Situado en Mortemart, catalogado como uno de los Pueblos más Bonitos de Francia y Monumento Histórico, el motte feudal se alza en la encrucijada de antiguos caminos. Una de las motas de Mortemart, símbolo del poder de la familia Drut, es testigo de los inicios del feudalismo en torno al año 1000. El abad Drut, caballero y señor de Mortemart, apoyó al conde de La Marche contra el rey de Francia durante el asedio de Bellac en 995. La cercana iglesia parroquial de Saint-Hilaire fue destruida a principios del siglo XIX.
