El 13 de septiembre de 1944, la 2ª división blindada del general Leclerc, que se dirigía a Estrasburgo, se enfrentó a la 112ª Panzerbrigada alemana. El grupo de combate del coronel Langlade, cuyo cuartel general se había instalado la víspera en el Hospicio San José, fue sorprendido por grandes elementos blindados enemigos. Mientras se oponía a ellos, el tanque Sherman "Champagne" del 12º Regimiento de Cazadores Africanos, comandado por el Aspirante Nouveau, fue alcanzado por dos proyectiles que lo incendiaron. La intervención de la aviación estadounidense permitió a la 2ª AD ganar la batalla de Dompaire y la liberación definitiva de Ville-sur-Illon.
