De Champagne tank
Op 13 september 1944 vocht de 2e pantserdivisie van generaal Leclerc op weg naar Straatsburg hard tegen de Duitse 112e Panzerbrigade. De gevechtsgroep van kolonel Langlade, waarvan het hoofdkwartier de vorige dag was opgezet in het Hospice St Joseph, werd overvallen door grote vijandelijke pantserelementen. Het was tijdens deze confrontatie dat de Sherman tank "Champagne" van het 12de Regiment van Afrikaanse Chasseurs onder bevel van Aspirant Nouveau, geraakt werd door twee granaten die hem in brand staken. Door de interventie van de Amerikaanse luchtmacht kon de 2e AD de slag om Dompaire en de definitieve bevrijding van Ville-sur-Illon winnen.
