Description

La fuente monumental, diseñada en 1626 por Guillaume Tabaguet de Dinant, fue restaurada en 1685, 1706, 1715 y 1844 y demolida en 1899 para ser sustituida por otro edificio monumental coronado por una estatua de Charles de Gonzague.

En Charleville, la fuente de la plaza Ducale estaba protegida en el siglo XVI por una valla de madera con torniquetes que impedían a los animales beber de ella , de acuerdo con las reglas impuestas en la época para prevenir las epidemias. También se prohibía a los carniceros lavar las tripas, a las amas de casa lavar la ropa y limpiar los cubos que no se utilizaban para transportar agua, etc.

La fuente del siglo XIX fue trasladada en 1999 e instalada a la entrada de la calle Bérégovoy, que sigue a la calle de la República desde la plaza Ducale.

El edificio que hoy adorna el centro de la plaza se inspiró en parte en la fuente de 1626 , de la que se conservan fragmentos en los museos municipales.
