Down House es la antigua casa del naturalista inglés Charles Darwin y su familia. Fue en la casa donde Darwin trabajó en sus teorías de evolución por selección natural. Ahora es un museo. Se mudaron el 14 de septiembre de 1842. La familia Darwin entonces estaba formada por Charles, su esposa Emma y sus hijos William Erasmus y Anne. Emma estaba muy embarazada de Mary Eleanor, que nacería el 23 de septiembre, pero moriría menos de un mes después, el 18 de octubre. También los otros hijos de Darwin nacerían aquí: Etty, George, Bessy, Francis, Leonard, Horace y Charles Waring Darwin. Los Darwin tuvieron diez hijos: dos murieron en la infancia. La muerte de su hija de 10 años tuvo un efecto devastador en Darwin. Siempre que se enfermaban temía que pudieran haber heredado debilidades por la endogamia debido a los estrechos lazos familiares que compartía con su esposa, quien también era su prima. Charles Darwin murió en la casa el 19 de abril de 1882, a los 73 años. Emma también murió allí en 1896. La casa se propone convertirse en un Sitio del Patrimonio Mundial.
