Los científicos pensaron que Gran Bretaña, la isla principal del Reino Unido, se creó hace millones de años por la fusión de dos masas terrestres antiguas: Laurentia y Avalonia. Sin embargo, un estudio de 2018 mostró que una tercera masa terrestre, Armórica, también estuvo involucrada en ese proceso. La mayor parte de Cornwall y un tramo de Devon, en el extremo suroeste de Gran Bretaña, parecen pertenecer a lo que ahora es Francia.
