Les scientifiques pensaient que la Grande-Bretagne, l'île principale du Royaume-Uni, avait été créée il y a des millions d'années par la fusion de deux anciennes masses terrestres : la Laurentia et l'Avalonia. Cependant, une étude en 2018 a montré qu'une troisième masse terrestre, l'Armorique, était également impliquée dans ce processus. La majeure partie de la Cornouailles et une partie du Devon, dans le sud-ouest extrême de la Grande-Bretagne, semblent appartenir à ce qui est maintenant la France.
