En 1666, su predecesora cayó presa de las llamas. Sir Christopher Wren fue encargado de construir una nueva casa de culto, aún más hermosa, algo en lo que ciertamente tuvo éxito. Con su imponente cúpula pintada, la de San Pablo es la iglesia más hermosa de la ciudad. La primera piedra se colocó en 1675 y durante los siguientes 35 años Sir Christopher siguió de cerca el progreso cada viernes. A la vez, también elaboró planes para 50 otras iglesias en Londres. A la edad de 78 años, experimentó su mayor triunfo: su hijo colocó la piedra angular en la cúpula de la catedral.
