Piazza Castelnuovo, junto con la adyacente Piazza Ruggero Settimo, forman un único espacio urbano, comúnmente llamado Piazza Politeama, gracias a la presencia del Teatro Politeama , el segundo teatro más importante de la ciudad después del Teatro Massimo.
La plaza representa una de las plazas más populares de la ciudad.
En Piazza Castelnuovo se encuentran una estructura llamada “Palchetto della Musica” (obra de Salvatore Valenti), el monumento a Carlo Cottone (obra de Giovan Battista Palazzotto y Domenico Costantino), las esculturas “Nautica” (obra de Mario Rutelli), “Lavoro " (obra de Benedetto Civiletti) y "Senzatetto" (obra de Pasquale Civiletti).
La plaza lleva el nombre de Carlo Cottone, Príncipe de Castelnuovo, uno de los defensores de la Constitución de Sicilia de 1812.
