Gagauzia es una región autónoma de Moldavia. El nombre oficial es Unidad Territorial Autónoma de Gagauzia .
Según algunas teorías, los gagaúzos descienden de los turcos selyúcidas que se asentaron en Dobruja, o de los pechenegos, Uz y cumanos que siguieron al selyúcida de Anatolia, el sultán Izzeddin Keykavus II . Más específicamente, un clan de turcos Oghuz emigraron a los Balcanes durante los conflictos inter-tribales con otros turcos. Este clan turco Oghuz se convirtió del islam al cristianismo ortodoxo después de establecerse en los Balcanes occidentales y fueron llamados turcos gagaúzos. Un gran grupo de gagaúzos más tarde dejó Bulgaria y se estableció en el sur de Besarabia, junto con un grupo de personas de origen búlgaro.
