Este canal fue excavado alrededor de 1930 para crear una conexión necesaria de este a oeste entre el Vecht y Hilversum. Formaba parte de un plan de apertura muy amplio para esta región, que también incluía la construcción de la carretera provincial que corre paralela al canal. Este plan fue diseñado por el jefe de inspección de Rijkswaterstaat Anton Mussert, quien sería despedido en 1934 del Ministerio debido a sus actividades en el NSB. Gracias a sus planes, la región se volvió mucho más accesible, lo que tuvo un efecto positivo en el desarrollo económico.
