El parque se encuentra entre el Amstel y el barrio de los Ríos. El parque fue nombrado en 1968 en honor al predicador estadounidense Martin Luther King, asesinado ese año. Desde 1949 se llamaba Amstelpark, un nombre que en 1971 se dio al actual Amstelpark en Buitenveldert. El parque fue incluido en 1990 en el distrito de Rivierenbuurt, entre 1998 y 2010 fue conocido como ZuiderAmstel. Desde 2010 pertenece al distrito de Zuid. En el parque se celebra anualmente el Parade desde 1990. A partir de 2005 el parque tuvo una gran renovación, al igual que en 2018/2019.
