Il parco si trova tra l'Amstel e il quartiere delle Rivierenbuurt. Il parco è stato intitolato nel 1968 al pastore americano Martin Luther King, assassinato nello stesso anno. Fino al 1949 si chiamava Amstelpark, un nome che nel 1971 è stato dato all'attuale Amstelpark di Buitenveldert. Il parco è stato assegnato nel 1990 al distretto Rivierenbuurt, e tra il 1998 e il 2010 era parte di ZuiderAmstel. Dal 2010 appartiene al distretto Zuid. Dal 1990 nel parco si tiene ogni anno la Parade. Dal 2005 il parco ha subito una grande ristrutturazione, così come nel 2018/2019.
