El Spui. En antiguo neerlandés escrito como Spuy) es una plaza en el centro de Ámsterdam, la capital de los Países Bajos. El Spui era originalmente un cuerpo de agua que formaba el límite sur de la ciudad hasta la década de 1420, cuando se excavó el canal Singel como un foso exterior alrededor de la ciudad. Un spui es un desagüe de agua bloqueable. La palabra está relacionada con los verbos neerlandeses spuiten y spuwen, cognados de la palabra inglesa spewing. Por lo tanto, Spui podría traducirse como Spew. En 1882, el Spui se rellenó y se convirtió en la plaza que conocemos hoy. En 1996, la plaza fue renovada y ahora es en gran parte libre de coches.
