En este lugar había un paso de mar hace 1000 años que se fue convirtiendo en tierra debido a la sedimentación de dunas marinas. En 1997 se ideó un proyecto para estudiar los cambios en el paisaje de dunas y ver los efectos cuando aquí aún había un paso de mar. Se excavó "De Kerkf". La Kerk es una abertura que se ha cavado en las dunas de Bergen para permitir la entrada de agua de mar y así poder estudiar el cambio en el paisaje de dunas. Tal abertura en la franja marina también se llama slufter.
