In this place, a sea inlet existed 1000 years ago that was filled in by the deposition of sea dunes. In 1997, a project was conceived to study the changes in the dune landscape and to observe the effects when there was still a sea inlet here. They dug "De Kerkf". The Kerkf is an opening that has been excavated in the dunes of Bergen to allow incoming seawater and thus study the changes in the dune landscape. Such an opening in the sea barrier is also called a slufter.
