El Reest es un arroyo de turbera que en gran parte forma la frontera entre las provincias de Overijssel y Drenthe. Para los estándares neerlandeses, es único que el Reest aún meandrea tanto. El valle del Reest (con un ancho que varía de aproximadamente 100 metros a hasta 500 metros) ofrece un buen sustrato para las cigüeñas que se encuentran en la estación de cigüeñas De Lokkerij, cerca de Havixhorst y en el área cercana a la Pieperij de Drenthe. Además de estas aves llamativas, también viven nueces y zorros, y hay una flora particular, que incluye, entre otros, el carex nórdico, la gran pimpinela y la caña de juncos rígida. Además, crece la rara hoja de sierra de pantano, conocida como la Orquídea del Reest.
