Oudewater fue un importante productor de cuerdas en los siglos XVI y XVII. La zona producía para ello la materia prima, el cáñamo. Los habitantes del pueblo se llaman hasta hoy en día Geelbuiken, porque los cordeleros envolvían fibras de cáñamo secas y amarillentas alrededor de su cintura.
