Oudewater était, au seizième et dix-septième siècle, un important producteur de cordes. L'environnement fournissait ainsi la matière première, le chanvre. Les habitants de la ville s'appellent encore aujourd'hui Les Ventres Jaunes, car les cordiers enroulaient des fibres de chanvre sèches et jaunies autour de leur ventre.
