Esta aldea en Neder-Betuwe perteneció de 1811 a 1817 al antiguo municipio de Beusichem, de 1818 a 1998 al antiguo municipio de Maurik y a partir de 1999 al municipio de Buren. El mismo nombre de lugar también aparece en Brabante Septentrional y Holanda Meridional. En 1915 y 1916 se encontraron en Essenbosch vestigios de un asentamiento del siglo II después de Cristo, posiblemente el castillo romano Levefanum.
