Holwerd se encuentra al noroeste de Dokkum y al sur del Mar de Wadden, entre Blija, Waaxens y Ternaard. El núcleo del pueblo está confinado entre la N356, N357 y N358. El Holwerdervaart fluye hacia el sur a lo largo de la N356, y también tiene un pequeño puerto de atraque. Entre la zona exterior de dique y el pueblo hay una pequeña área industrial. En 2021, el pueblo contaba con 1,595 habitantes. El pueblo también incluye las localidades de Kletterbuurt y Drieboerehuizen.
