Farmsum es una aldea en el municipio de Eemsdelta en la provincia neerlandesa de Groninga, que limita directamente con la localidad de Delfzijl. La aldea cuenta con 1.620 habitantes. La parte antigua del noroeste de la aldea se encuentra situada en un montículo. Alrededor del año 1000 se mencionó por primera vez la aldea de Farmsum: Fretmarashem. Este nombre se puede explicar como 'lugar de residencia de Fretmar'. En el año 1228 había una referencia a Fermeshem. A finales del siglo XIV, el nombre se escribía como Fyrmesen y más tarde como Fermissum y Farremsem. La administración de justicia, así como el provisorio sobre el este de Fivelingo y los Oldambten, estaba entonces en manos de los Ripperda, los habitantes de la mansión Huis te Farmsum.
