Farmsum è un villaggio nel comune di Eemsdelta nella provincia olandese di Groningen, che confina direttamente con la località di Delfzijl. Il villaggio conta 1.620 abitanti. La parte antica nord-occidentale del villaggio è situata su un tumulo. Intorno all'anno 1000 si parla per la prima volta del villaggio di Farmsum: Fretmarashem. Questo nome può essere interpretato come 'luogo di residenza di Fretmar'. Nell'anno 1228 si parlava di Fermeshem. Alla fine del XIV secolo il nome era scritto come Fyrmesen e successivamente come Fermissum e Farremsem. L'amministrazione della giustizia, così come la proosdij sull'est di Fivelingo e gli Oldambten, erano allora in mano ai Ripperda, gli abitanti della dimora Huis te Farmsum.
