En la playa de Scheveningen, en febrero de 1602, partió un carro de vela diseñado por el científico e inventor de Brujas Simon Stevin. El carro de vela partió con 27 diplomáticos hacia el pueblo costero de Petten. Se tardaron dos horas, pero viajaron a una velocidad para entonces desconocida de 50 km/h.
