Es uno de los castillos más de cuento de hadas de los Países Bajos. El Castillo Schaloen, que está rodeado de agua, se asemeja, tal como está ahora, a un castillo de caza francés.
La primera construcción del siglo XII se incendió por completo en el siglo XVI. Los edificios auxiliares, establos y graneros son del siglo XVIII.
Después de la ocupación francesa, el castillo adquiere su apariencia actual durante una restauración del arquitecto Pierre Cuypers en 1894, con la torre occidental y la torre de escaleras.
