C'est l'un des châteaux les plus féeriques des Pays-Bas. Le Château Schaloen, entouré de douves, ressemble, tel qu'il est aujourd'hui, à un pavillon de chasse français.
La toute première construction du douzième siècle a entièrement brûlé au seizième siècle. Les annexes, écuries et granges datent du dix-huitième siècle.
Après l'occupation française, le château a acquis son apparence actuelle lors d'une restauration de l'architecte Pierre Cuypers en 1894, avec sa tour occidentale et son escalier.
Astuce ! Si vous regardez dans le fossé depuis le grand pont en pierres, vous verrez sûrement de nombreux carpes nager...
