El lugar Schoonhoven se originó a lo largo del río Zevender, cuyo curso aún es reconocible en la Lange Weistraat. Allí se encontraba un castillo a la altura del actual Hofland.
Schoonhoven fue mencionado por primera vez en 1247 como Sconhouen. En 1375 y en julio de 1518 ocurrieron grandes incendios en la ciudad. En 1575, el Asedio de Schoonhoven (1575) fue llevado a cabo por Gilles de Berlaymont al servicio del Duque de Alba, quien, sin embargo, dos años después cedió toda Holanda.
Ya en el siglo XVII había conocidos plateros. Schoonhoven todavía tiene en 2010 una Escuela Internacional de Plata. La ciudad es conocida como la Ciudad de la Plata.
