La località di Schoonhoven è sorta lungo il fiume Zevender, il cui corso è ancora riconoscibile nella Lange Weistraat. Qui si trovava un castello all'altezza dell'attuale Hofland.
Schoonhoven è stata menzionata per la prima volta nel 1247 come Sconhouen. Nel 1375 e nel luglio del 1518 si verificarono grandi incendi in città. Nel 1575 ci fu l'Assedio di Schoonhoven (1575) da parte di Gilles de Berlaymont al servizio del Duca di Alva, il quale però due anni dopo conquistò l'intera Olanda.
Già nel XVII secolo c'erano noti argentieri. Schoonhoven ha ancora nel 2010 una Scuola Internazionale dell'Argento. La città è quindi conosciuta come la Città dell'Argento.
