El nombre histórico de Haastrecht es Havekesdrecht. En 1108 se hizo la primera mención de este lugar. Haastrecht se formó alrededor de 1100 en el lugar donde el río pantanoso Vlist desemboca en el IJssel holandés.
Más tarde se construyó un castillo en este asentamiento, cuyos cimientos han sido encontrados.
Debido a su ubicación, Haastrecht obtuvo derechos de ciudad en 1396. Una importante ruta de navegación era a través del Vlist hacia el IJssel holandés. En Haastrecht se encontraba la esclusa que conectaba ambos ríos. Esta esclusa fue destruida más tarde por Dordrecht, debido a la competencia por los peajes de la navegación.
Los edificios que definen el paisaje en Haastrecht son el ayuntamiento de 1618, el puente levadizo sobre el IJssel de 1883 y la iglesia Reformada, de cuyos primeros elementos datan del siglo XIII.
En el IJssel holandés en dirección a Gouda se encontraba el monasterio de Stein, donde Desiderio Erasmo vivió durante algunos años.
