El pueblo se originó alrededor de la esclusa construida en 1448 en el Grecht, que se llamó Woerdense Verlaat. El asentamiento creció en dos regiones: Holanda y Utrecht. La parte holandesa, situada al oeste del Grecht y al sur del Kollenwetering, pertenecía al juzgado de Nieuwkoop. La parte de Utrecht, al norte del Kollenwetering y alrededor de la comunidad, formaba parte del juzgado de Wilnis, mientras que la sección situada al sur pertenecía al juzgado de Kamerik. Después de 1813, los juzgados se transformaron en municipios y Woerdense Verlaat siguió dividido en tres municipios. Solo el 1 de enero de 1989, tras una reorganización municipal, Woerdense Verlaat se unió a la municipalidad de Nieuwkoop, junto con una parte ilógica y grande de Kamerik.
