Los habitantes de Terschelling llaman al pueblo simplemente: West. El pueblo tiene un núcleo antiguo, llamado Oud-West por sus habitantes, alrededor del cual se han construido muchos nuevos barrios. En West-Terschelling se encuentra el puerto de Terschelling en una bahía natural. Terschelling tiene una pequeña flota pesquera propia. La pesca se realiza profesionalmente únicamente de camarones. La población de West-Terschelling ha estado históricamente muy orientada hacia el mar. Sin embargo, hasta bien entrado el siglo pasado también había algunos ganaderos. El turismo es la principal fuente de ingresos.
