Die Bewohner von Terschelling nennen das Dorf kurz: West. Das Dorf hat einen alten Kern, von den Bewohnern Oud-West genannt, um den herum eine große Anzahl neuer Wohnviertel gebaut wurde. In West-Terschelling liegt der Hafen von Terschelling an einer natürlichen Bucht. Terschelling hat eine kleine eigene Fischerflotte. Es wird professionell ausschließlich auf Garnelen gefischt. Die Bevölkerung von West-Terschelling ist traditionell stark auf das Meer ausgerichtet. Doch bis weit ins letzte Jahrhundert gab es auch einige Viehzüchter. Der Tourismus bildet die Hauptquelle des Einkommens.
