Se encuentra al sureste de Ee, al este de Dokkum, al norte de Kollum y al noroeste de Kollumerpomp. El núcleo del pueblo está situado entre la N358 y el Dokkumergrootdiep. Al noroeste se encuentra el Lauwersmeer, con el Parque Nacional Lauwersmeer. En 2021, el pueblo contaba con 585 habitantes. También se incluyen en el pueblo las aldeas de Dokkumer Nieuwe Zijlen, Molenbuurt, Nieuwland y una granja que originalmente pertenecía a Nieuwland, pero que en 2019 solo se puede acceder a través de Dijkshorne, y por lo tanto se cuenta también como parte de este. La población en la semi-isla entre el Dokkumergrootdiep y el Oud Dokkerumerdiep también forma parte del pueblo Engwierum.
