Si trova a sud-est di Ee, a est di Dokkum, a nord di Kollum e a nord-ovest di Kollumerpomp. Il nucleo del villaggio si trova tra la N358 e il Dokkumergrootdiep. A nord-ovest si trova il Lauwersmeer, con il Parco Nazionale Lauwersmeer. Nel 2021 il villaggio contava 585 abitanti. Nel villaggio rientrano anche le frazioni Dokkumer Nieuwe Zijlen, Molenbuurt, Nieuwland e una fattoria che originariamente apparteneva a Nieuwland, ma nel 2019 è accessibile solo tramite Dijkshorne e per questo considerata parte di essa. Anche l'abitazione sull' semisfondo tra il Dokkumergrootdiep e il Oud Dokkerumerdiep rientra nel villaggio di Engwierum.
