Como capital del municipio de Oldambt, Winschoten cumple una función central en este municipio, pero también para el resto de Este de Groningen. Winschoten es, después de la ciudad de Groningen, la segunda ciudad comercial de la provincia con una superficie comercial de aproximadamente 77,000 m². Debido a la proximidad de la frontera alemana, la ciudad también tiene un gran atractivo para los consumidores en la región fronteriza de Emsland y Ostfriesland. En 2021, Winschoten tenía 17,750 habitantes, lo que la convierte en el quinto lugar de Groningen.
