Surhuizum se encuentra al noreste de Drachten, en la N358 entre los pueblos de Surhuisterveen y Augustinusga. En 2021, el pueblo tenía 1.275 habitantes. Surhuizum también incluye las aldeas de Buwetille, Kortwoude, Ophuis, Surhuizumer Mieden y Vierhuizen. El pueblo es originalmente una aldea rural, una que era muy agrícola, lo que se puede ver en las a veces majestuosas granjas que se encuentran a ambos lados de la calle principal. Es probable que el nombre del lugar se refiera al hecho de que se originó en una zona situada al norte, y estas eran las casas del sur.
