Nijhuizum se encuentra al sureste de Bolsward, entre Workum y los Vlakke Brekken y los Bombrekken. El núcleo del pueblo está conectado a través del Nijhuizumervaart y De Grons directamente con los Vlakke Brekken. A lo largo del área del pueblo fluye el Lange Vliet. El pueblo también tiene un pequeño puerto de atraque. En 2021, el pueblo contaba con 55 habitantes. Nijhuizum es un pueblo rural donde la ganadería lechera y el turismo/recreación juegan un papel importante, con tres campings.
