Nijhuizum liegt im Südosten von Bolsward, zwischen Workum und den Vlakke Brekken und den Bombrekken. Der Dorfkern ist über den Nijhuizumervaart und De Grons direkt mit den Vlakke Brekken verbunden. Entlang des Dorfgebiets fließt die Lange Vliet. Das Dorf hat auch einen kleinen Anlegerhafen. Im Jahr 2021 hatte das Dorf 55 Einwohner. Nijhuizum ist ein landwirtschaftliches Dorf, in dem die Milchviehzucht und der Tourismus/Freizeit eine wichtige Rolle spielen, mit drei Campingplätzen.
