Gaanderen es una aldea en el municipio de Doetinchem, ubicada en la provincia holandesa de Gelderland. La aldea limita con Terborg y Gaanderen tiene 5.575 habitantes. Gaanderen se originó en el siglo XII. En ese entonces, la aldea se llamaba Gernere, en honor a las dunas que protegían la tierra contra el Oude IJssel. Gernere se derivaría de las palabras gér y laar, que significan "cordillera afilada". En el siglo XVII, el lugar, que entonces contaba con aproximadamente 120 habitantes y 20 granjas, se convirtió en una de las cinco aldeas de Doetinchem. El área fue llamada 'Gander'.
