En la edad de hielo, hace unos 200.000 años, se formó el macizo de Veluwe. La masa de hielo del norte elevó el terreno, creando altas colinas de acumulación, entre las que se encuentra Veluwe. En una edad de hielo posterior, el hielo no llegó a lo que hoy es los Países Bajos, pero en la colina de acumulación había grandes cantidades de nieve. Cuando se calentó, el agua del deshielo de la nieve dio lugar a los denominados "valles de deshielo" y así se formó también el valle del arroyo Wenumse.
