Fort Kijkuit fue construido alrededor de 1845 y es uno de los muchos fuertes en esta región de la Nueva Línea de Agua Holandesa. Esta área podía ser inundada en tiempos de amenaza de guerra (eso se llama inundación) para obstaculizar el paso del enemigo. A través de un ingenioso sistema de compuertas, en caso de amenaza de guerra, unos 50 cm de agua fluían sobre los campos. Así, el agua se volvía demasiado profunda para ser cruzada a caballo o con cañones, pero no lo suficiente como para navegar. Además, las zanjas y caminos quedaban invisibles, desorientando al enemigo. Los puntos débiles en ubicaciones estratégicas, como un cruce, compuerta o canal, eran defendidos con un fuerte, como es el caso de este fuerte Kijkuit. Este fuerte ahora es gestionado por Natuurmonumenten y no es accesible.
