En 1540, el Rin fluía al norte de la actual Schenkenschans, giró hacia el norte y luego se dividió en Rin y Waal en el molino de Lobith. Gradualmente, se formó un nuevo brazo del Waal al sur de Schenkenschans, que con una curva hacia el norte desembocaba en Bimmen en el Waal original. Así se formó una pequeña isla, llamada 's Gravenwaard. Debido a que el Viejo Waal se llenó de arena, pronto los barcos más grandes ya no pudieron navegar por el Tolhuis. Ellos tomaron el nuevo Waal, del cual el actual Vossegat es aún un vestigio. El señor feudal, el duque Guillermo de Cleves, mandó construir una casa de peaje en 's Gravenwaard y ordenó a los barqueros que pagaran el peaje allí. Esto puede considerarse como el origen de la casa de peaje.
