En el Mauritshuis también cuelga el famoso Jilguero de Carel Fabritius 1654. La pintura juega un papel central en el libro El jilguero de Donna Tartt, que ha sido adaptado al cine en la película del mismo nombre.
El nombre jilguero se utilizaba inicialmente solo para ejemplares que se mantenían en cautiverio y habían aprendido a sacar agua con, por ejemplo, un dedal atado a una cadena de un recipiente que tenían debajo. En otras palabras: de un pincón se podía hacer un jilguero.
En el siglo XVII en Holanda, donde precisamente el arte del jilguero era popular, el pájaro podía simbolizar la ingeniosidad y la perseverancia.
