Nel Mauritshuis si trova anche il famoso Puttertje di Carel Fabritius 1654. Il dipinto gioca un ruolo centrale nel libro Il cardellino di Donna Tartt, che è stato adattato nel film omonimo.
Il nome putter era inizialmente usato solo per gli esemplari tenuti in cattività che avevano imparato a bere, ad esempio, con un ditale attaccato a una catena per attingere acqua da una ciotola che si trovava sotto di loro. In altre parole: da un cardo si poteva creare un putter.
Nella Holland del XVII secolo, dove il trucco del putter era particolarmente popolare, l'uccello poteva simboleggiare ingegnosità e perseveranza.
