El municipio cubre un área de 34.32 km² de las cuales 0.53 km² es agua. Se compone de la ciudad de Leerdam, los pueblos rurales de Kedichem, Schoonrewoerd y Oosterwijk. La frontera sur de la ciudad está formada por el río Linge. Leerdam tuvo los derechos de ciudad en 1407. El pequeño río Linge, define la atmósfera y el tono del paisaje. Hace varios siglos atrás, Leerdam formó una parte del dominio Vijfheerenlanden, antes de que fuera elevado a la categoría de condado en 1498. La rica historia de Leerdam puede ser encontrada en edificios históricos como el Grote Kerk , el Hofje van mevrouw van Aerden, y el Oude Raadhuis.
