El puerto latino Portus significa puerto. Nieuwpoort fue, junto con Schoonhoven, un nuevo puerto en el Lek.
La ciudad ya obtuvo derechos de ciudad en 1283. Debido a su posición en la frontera de Holland y Sticht Utrecht, sufrió muchos conflictos. Ya en 1402, las tropas de Jan van Arkel sitiaran la ciudad.
La guerra contra Luis XIV, en el siglo XVII, fue la razón de la construcción de fortificaciones según el mejorado sistema de fortificaciones del Antiguo Holandés. Decenas de edificios fueron demolidos para ello. En 1697 se construyó el ayuntamiento, sobre el puerto, con la compuerta de inundación debajo.
En 1795, las tropas francesas, bajo el mando de Daendels y Pichegru, conquistaron los Países Bajos, y la fortaleza perdió su función.
